I find delicious food and fashionable places.” Whether your passion exists in background, food, or nature, these places supply plenty.Over there in Rome, I begin my day at the Colosseum, have a taste of the real Roman food for lunch and finally finish with a sunset walk in the Vatican Gardens. Every single thing you do naturally bonds with the city’s introduced history and culture. In Rotterdam, I met with elegant contemporary buildings and experienced the hustle and bustle of the port where ships come and go. To improve your journey, consider these tips:

- Try the local food. Each city has its food which is the history of the people and the tales of the food they eat.
- Ask the locals to learn about the best places to swim, eat and explore. Their recommendations will direct you to unexpected places that are not mentioned in guidebooks.
Hidden places to explore are in the back streets of R cities.
In Racine, I just happened to find a small art gallery where the hometown artists exhibited their paintings.
Furthermore, you can also check out some of the quiet places like Trastevere and the Jewish Ghetto that are a short walk from the bustling centers in Rome, which offers a look at the real life of Italy’s locals that a lot of people want, but only in a smaller section. These hidden gems are a glimpse into daily life (beyond the major tourist spots) and a chance to get to know the city for real. They also give a contemplative, sometimes even meditative atmosphere to relish the aspects that make each city unique. To discover these spots, you can:
- Local blogs or social pages concerning the city should be your next moves.
- Visit small bookshops or cafes and get chatty with the people you meet. There is a high possibility that they will be eager to tell you their favorite spots.
- Brooke Saward, who has a blog called “World of Wanderlust,” loves discovering hidden gems.Sometimes the best discoveries come when you are not looking for them.
When is the Best Time to Visit Cities That Start With R?
In places with freezing winters like Reykjavik in Iceland, traveling during the summer will bring not only better weather but also a longer day with more moonlight to see the beautiful landscapes.
On the contrary, you can go to some places like Rio de Janeiro, which is cooler in winter than in the other seasons so you can avoid the sweltering heat and take part in outdoor events and festivals such as the big Rio Carnival that goes on in Rio de Janeiro.
To choose the best time to visit, consider:

Where Did the Map Take Us? A Tale of Misguided Adventures in Rome
Last spring I together with my cousin, was ready to unravel the mysteries of the Eternal City and the streets of it led by nothing but an old map.
Rome appears so casual: you can easily stumble on stones when you wander by without being able to resist your gelato. However, it turns out, it is a most competitive distraction in Italy. There we go with that map in hand and my solid guess was that it had been drawn by either a pirate or a total prankster. We were following our ‘map of treasures’; however, it showed the road to Colosseum was right next to St.
Peter’s Basilica. Imagine that! Sitting on the side and Jesus in the middle! We two were trapped in this already stark incongruous situation in which a local man, luckily, even gently explained to us that our map was upside down. That’s a textbook collapse of all your backups in the very first run.
But wait, it gets even better! Besides the upside-down position, the map happened to be an old one dating back to 1990! Can you believe that? Who knew cities could change in 30 years? Not us for sure. The layouts were changed, some nicest sites were wiped out, we ended up at a dead end which should have been a bridge according to the map.
It was not just any bridge but the one wrongly named “Ponte Chuck Norris” because it was not there anyway but still came in the way. We definitely missed the boat there. So, what did we learn? When in Rome, do as the Romans do — ditch the old map and grab a gelato! And maybe ask a real person for the way, unless you want to find bridges that aren’t there.
Oh and always check your map’s date; it might save you from a “historic” tour of places that no longer exist.
